Thought Field Therapy

This therapy was discovered and developed by Dr Roger Callahan in the 1970s in America, and was originally known as The Callahan Technique. Callahan was a pioneer in behavioural and cognitive methods of psychology from the 1950s onwards, and he discovered that many people came to him with issues that seemed to have what he described as a Thought Field attached to them.

An example of a Thought Field could be that someone who has a fear of spiders, when asked to think of, or imagine a spider, will attach many other ideas at once to that image. These could be the colour of a spider, places they have recently seen one, the way they seem to scutter along the ground, the image of themselves running or screaming, and mistaken ideas of the harm a spider might do to them. The client is asked to bring this Thought Field to mind and then rate the severity of its effect on them on a scale of one to ten.

Dr Callahan found through his research, that a system of tapping important points on the body in a set order, whilst accessing the Thought Field, seemed to have an amazing effect in lowering this score and allowing the person some release from their problem.

A great advantage of this therapy is that once learned the sequences can be carried out at home and even applied to other problems as well.

At Darlington Hypnotherapy Associates this therapy can be carried out alone, or in combination with hypnotherapy and can help with anxiety, stress, phobias, confidence building and even stop smoking.
